I dug into my archives and pulled out a couple audio files recorded on my iPhone carrying the date November 13, 2012 on the file names. That appears to be the date of my first full-length interview with Brendan Iribe, the co-founder and CEO of Oculus.
A few weeks later my first major article about Oculus appeared on the front page of the business section of the Orange County Register in California, lending some mainstream legitimacy to the early Oculus effort in its local region. I had brought a photojournalist along from the Register to the meeting to take photographs of the effort and I met Palmer Luckey too.
Iribe and I started talking about the idea of Portal in VR and ended with my transition to a demo. I don’t think I’ve ever published this audio before and I’m putting it out immediately as a free episode to the Good Virtual Reality Podcast. Earlier this week I spoke with Ryan Engle at Golf+ about the effort to build a sustainable business creating wish fulfillment for golfers in a market that really got its start around the time of this conversation more than a decade earlier.
Please consider becoming a paying member of my efforts to highlight Good Virtual Reality, granting early access to news, analysis and podcast episodes like Engle’s that you can’t find anywhere else.
I’ve removed some ums and uhs and a few unintelligible segments from this recording, and put the audio through Adobe Podcasts to try and improve the quality.
